Samsung’s In&Out Flip phone demonstrates a display that could be the next step for foldable smartphones.

Needless to say, Samsung was present at CES 2024, and the company had plenty to show attendees. Two announcements really stood out for us, Samsung’s transparent MicroLED display, and In&Out Flip demo device. We’ve decided to send out our CES 2024 awards to both of those products, but here we’ll focus on the Samsung In&Out Flip and its display. This phone actually folds in two directions.

Samsung’s In/Out Flip phone does a great job of demonstrating the company’s new versatile displays

Samsung actually brought forth a demo smartphone that is equipped with an In&Out Flip display. That’s a flip phone-type device, and it’s a great way to demonstrate these displays. This device can be folded both towards you and in the opposite direction without a problem, thanks to the new display.

A phone of this type brings one major advantage over regular clamshell foldables. It requires only one display to show you the information, regardless of whether folded or not. Even when folded, this display can show you the information, and thus doesn’t require a secondary display to do so. It is an interesting idea, and the fact that it can fold in two ways is only an added perk, of course.

This handset went through rather rigorous testing, which proves these displays could be ready to go

Samsung said that this could be a solution for people who stay away from foldables due to their thickness. The company also noted that these panels “underwent folding in extreme temperatures ranging from -20 degrees Celsius to 60 degrees Celsius. Samsung even bounced basketballs on these panels, just to test their durability. To make things even more extreme, Samsung rubbed sand on the In&Out Flip demo device, and it was also tested for immersion in water.

Knowing Samsung, we can expect a retail device with one such display at some point in the future. Chances are that the first use scenario will be a clamshell foldable, based on the one demonstrated at CES in Las Vegas. We don’t know when that might happen, though, so stay tuned.
