After using a Snapdragon processor in the Galaxy S23 series globally this year, Samsung going back to its usual dual-processor strategy next year. The Galaxy S24 series will feature a custom Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip in some markets and the Exynos 2400 in others. This may not be a wise move if a recent leak is accurate. Benchmark scores show that the new Exynos chip struggles to compete with the current Snapdragon in GPU performance.
The Exynos 2400 fared worse than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in GPU test
Screenshots shared by X/Twitter tipster @Tech_Reve compare the GPU performance of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2-powered Galaxy S23 with that of the Exynos 2400-powered Galaxy S24. We can see that the former’s Adreno 740 GPU scored 1,746 in Basemark’s Powerboard 4.0 test. The latter’s Xclipse 940 GPU, on the other hand, achieved a score of 1,656.
The score achieved by the Exynos 2400’s GPU is notably higher than the Exynos 2200’s Xclipse 920. The gap to the Adreno 740 GPU isn’t huge either. However, this still doesn’t bode well for the upcoming Samsung chipset. That’s because it won’t be competing against the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. As said earlier, Qualcomm is readying the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and this chip will go inside the Galaxy S24.
Since the Exynos 2400 will be Samsung’s alternative to the new Qualcomm processor, comparing it with an older chip doesn’t make sense. More so when you consider that the Korean firm will use it in the Galaxy S24 series in some markets. Unfortunately, it fails to outpower the current Snapdragon in GPU benchmark tests. With the improvements Qualcomm has made to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, things might look embarrassing for the Exynos 2400.
Of course, neither chip is official yet. The two companies are certainly hard at work on optimizing their solutions. However, not much time is left before the Galaxy S24 series is here. Rumors are that Samsung will unveil the new flagships in mid-January. Mass production of the devices might begin as early as November. If these benchmark scores are anything to go by, the Exynos 2400 chipset faces a tough battle to keep up with the Snapdragon.
The Galaxy S24 Ultra might be the only model to pick
As usual, Samsung is readying three models of the Galaxy S24 series. The standard model will be accompanied by the Plus and Ultra models. However, the Galaxy S24 Ultra might be the only model to buy. Rumors say it will get the new Snapdragon chip globally, with the other two models using the “underperforming” Exynos 2400 in some markets. We’ll have to wait and see if this rumor turns out to be accurate.
