Hisense has arrived in Berlin for IFA with an interesting new TV concept. It’s the company’s next-gen “Obsidian” panel, which is being called “UXN” at least internally. It will likely get a nicer marketing name when it actually is released in 2024.
The UXN is a new Mini-LED TV that is going to provide a wider color gamut, more brightness and more dimming zones, compared to any of its current TVs. But that’s not even the biggest thing about this TV. The biggest feature is the new anti-reflection tech. Reflections are a big deal on TVs, and even more so on OLED and QLED TVs which offer deeper blacks.
However, Hisense is not the first company to show off something like this. LG already showed off a prototype which uses a low-reflection polarizer known as “Vanta Black”. And apparently, it does make a huge difference. Basically, if a TV’s images are brighter than the reflection, then you’ll see the screen and not reflections.
The flip side there is that if you reduce the intensity of the reflections, then you don’t need as much brightness to overcome it. Making it easier to have a great panel on display, without having to raise the brightness and possibly destroy the image.
Hisense has a problem, however
While this does look great, Hisense does have a problem with these anti-reflective TVs. And that’s the fact that it is harder to sell these TVs. As companies are able to boast about higher brightness and a more natural range of colors. Though, if enough people see these TVs in stores and on trade show floors, it might make it a bit easier for Hisense to sell these types of TVs.
So far the UXN does not have a price, or a release date other than sometime in 2024. It wouldn’t be surprising to see it again at CES in January, and then it launch a few months later.
