The metaverse is a hot topic nowadays, but HTC is not, at least not as much as it used to be. The Taiwanese company had a large fall from grace a few years back, and now it’s resigned itself to the budget smartphone world and a collection of VR headsets. However, according to Digitimes, HTC will return to the premium smartphone market, and this next phone will be built for the metaverse.

This next HTC smartphone will be built for the metaverse

The tech world hears the word metaverse all the time in publications nowadays. It’s the latest frontier, and companies like Meta and Microsoft are trying to help make the dream a reality. Other companies are jumping onto the metaverse bandwagon. Companies like TCL announced some interesting AR glasses during CES 2022.

HTC also makes tech for the metaverse in the form of VR headsets. It builds and sells high-end VR headsets while shying away from the high-end smartphone market. That changed with its latest announcement at MWC. Charles Huang, the GM of the Vive Asia-Pacific division presented the news.

He said that HTC will soon launch a high-end smartphone in April, and this phone will focus on the metaverse. This means that it will have a host of AR and VR features to immerse people into the metaverse.

The company didn’t give any more information on the phone, but we know that it will launch sometime next month. That means that we won’t have long to wait on further details.

What specs to expect

Since HTC says this is a high-end smartphone, that could mean top of the line specs. Most of 2022’s high-end smartphones use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC. While that’s true, we can’t rule out a more premium Dimensity chip. MediaTek did overtake Qualcomm last year for Android phones.

People don’t really know how demanding the metaverse will be when it comes to RAM and storage. However, since this is going to be a high-end phone, at least 8GB of RAM should be expected. When it comes to the display, HTC hasn’t really been that big on having the fanciest displays. A 1080p+ display shouldn’t be too far out of the question.

More information on this phone should come out as April inches closer. Hopefully, this phone will be the thing to turn HTC’s fortunes around.
