Huawei has announced a new pair of truly wireless earbuds, the FreeClips. These earbuds do look quite odd, and it’s the company’s first iteration of this new design. It’s one of those experimental designs that the company likes to do from time to time. They’re completely different than the Huawei FreeBuds 5 and FreeBuds Pro 3.

The Huawei FreeClip earbuds are now official with a rather odd design

These are open-ear earbuds, with a huge emphasis on comfort, use in sports activities, and ear infection prevention. They technically never go inside of your ear, hence they protect your ear from the dirt that accumulates on earbuds, if you’re not cleaning them regularly.

These earbuds attach to the side of your ear, as they feature a ‘C-bridge Design’, as Huawei calls it. You can also refer to these earbuds as clip-on earbuds, as that’s basically what they are.

They consist out of a ‘Comfort Bean’ and an ‘Acoustic Ball’ parts

There are two separate pieces on these earbuds, which are connected with a ‘C-bridge’. The ‘Comfort Bean’ is placed behind your ear, while the ‘Acoustic Ball’ sits on the entrance into your ear cavity, and shoots sound directly into your ear.

Huawei says that it did extensive testing with these earbuds, and that they’re great for indoor and outdoor sports scenarios. They’re very comfortable, and stay in place without a problem, once you set them up.

Noisy environments could be a problem

Noisy environments could be a problem, though, as the earbuds don’t have noise isolation, and sit outside of your ear, technically. That could be once scenario for which these earbuds are not exactly ideal.

These earbuds are very light at 5.6 grams, and have a rather compact charging case, which weighs 44.5 grams. The sound leakage levels have been reduced as much as possible, says Huawei, while multi-EQ is also available in the AI Life app.

The entire surface of the Huawei FreeClip earbuds can be used for touch controls. You can have both double-tap and triple-tap controls at your disposal, and you can customize that within the app.

Both wired & wireless charging is supported

Both wired and wireless charging is available here, though wired charging is faster, of course. With just a 10-minute charge you can get enough battery for 3 hours of non-stop listening, says the company. Reaching a full charge will take 40 minutes. Each earbud should be able to provide up to 8 hours of music playback, and 5 hours of talk time. With the charging case, you can get up to 36 hours, claims Huawei.

The Huawei FreeClip earbuds are also IP54-certified for water and dust resistance. You will also find some additional eartips inside the box. The Huawei FreeClip earbuds come in Black and Purple colors. These earbuds are priced at €199 / £179.99 in the EU / UK. Pre-orders kick off today, and the earbuds will become available to purchase in Europe and the UK in late December.
