iPhone 16 Pro could offer up to 2TB of storage, but there's a catch

The iPhone 16 Pro could end up offering 2TB of storage, but there’s a catch here… a big one. That much storage could mean slower performance at the same time, which seems like an odd tradeoff.

The iPhone 16 Pro could end up offering 2TB of storage but with one big caveat

That doesn’t mean people will notice the slower performance, but inferior storage could be used to hit that 2TB level. The same goes for a 1TB storage variant, actually, as DigiTimes reports that Apple could make that tradeoff.

What’s going on exactly? Well, Apple is currently using the TLC Cells or Triple Level Cell NANA storage, which features faster read and write speeds than the ones the company is considering switching to.

Apple could end up using higher-density Quad-Level Cell or QLC NAND flash memory for the 1TB and 2TB iPhone 16 Pro models. That flash memory does come with slower read and write speeds.

The QLC NAND flash memory does have its advantages

There are advantages to QLC NAND flash memory, though, of course. The main one is that it takes less storage, so that allows Apple to offer more storage in its smartphones.

So, as things stand, Apple could use faster flash storage in its models up to 512GB, while 1TB and 2TB models could use new flash storage that is also slower at the same time.

Just to be clear, you likely won’t feel the difference during daily use, if that’s what you’re worried about. The difference in speeds between the two storage units probably won’t be as significant, but we still don’t have all the details.

Still, many of you do want the best performance possible, especially when you’re paying that much for a phone. Nobody can blame you for that. We’ll see what will happen in the end. Nothing has been confirmed just yet.
