Nokia is announcing new discounts on its smartphones in the U.S. ahead of the 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Tampere and Helsinki, Finland. Nokia’s parent company, HMD Global, also happens to be the Official Partner of the event, which will take place from May 13-29.

“We are excited to pay homage to our Finnish roots and love for ice hockey as the Official Partner of the 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship and look forward to sharing the experience with our loyal customers and avid hockey fans in the USA,” HMD Global’s VP for North America, Cristian Capelli, said.

Additionally, the company is also promoting its rugged smartphone, the Nokia XR20, with a series of marketing materials. Nokia sought the services of Finnish ice hockey fans, Viki & Köpi, to use the XR20 as an ice-hockey puck. The company even shared a short video of the phone being put through its paces.

Nokia is offering discounts of up to 22% on its range of smartphones during the 2022 Ice Hockey World Championship

Although the Nokia XR20 first debuted in July last year, the company seems to be offering it a new lease of life. The phone can be yours starting at $549.99 and is available in Ultra Blue and Granite Grey shades from the company’s website. Nokia promises three years of OS upgrades and four years of security updates for the XR20. It’s worth noting that sites like Amazon currently offer the Nokia XR20 for much cheaper.

Customers are also eligible for discounts of up to 22% on “select Nokia devices” throughout the month. The promotions can be availed using the code “ICECHAMP22” between May 5 – May 12. Nokia said the deals would be “automatically applied at checkout” during the championship games between May 13 – May 29.

Nokia marketed the XR20 as a “life-proof” mid-range smartphone last year. It uses the MIL-STD-810H durability standard for maximum ruggedness. It is also drop resistant, temperature resistant, and “kid-and-pet-resistant,” according to Nokia. The company’s press statement claims the phone can even survive 6-foot drops or extreme temperatures between 131°F to -7°F.

The Finnish company also sells a couple of other mid-rangers in the U.S., including the Nokia X100 5G. Meanwhile, those looking to turn back the clock will appreciate the availability of the budget-friendly Nokia 2760 Flip. This flip phone is currently available via Straight Talk and Tracfone.
