A global pandemic, a diminishing economy, rising prices, scalpers; the Sony PlayStation 5 has been through a lot over the past three years since it was first launched. However, It’s proven to be a very popular system, and the sales numbers seem to speak for themselves. According to some new reports, the PlayStation 5 has surpassed 50 million units sold.

With all of the drama going on over the past couple of years, you’d be surprised that any console was able to be sold at all. Thanks to the rampant supply chain issues, store shelves were devoid of gaming consoles. However, despite this, Sony was able to be a true star in the console market. Back in July, Sony announced that it had reached the 40 million-console milestone. So, between July and December, the company was able to push another 10 million units. This shows that sales of the console are increasing.

In terms of sales numbers, the PlayStation 5 was able to stand out amongst the competition. As noted by the Financial Times, the PlayStation 5’s sales jumped by 65% this year to a whopping 22.5 million units sold. Microsoft’s and Nintendo’s fortunes weren’t quite so fortunate. Nintendo Switch sales dipped by 18%, and Xbox sales by 15% this year.

Nintendo losing sales is both not surprising and surprising at the same time. It shouldn’t come as a shock, seeing as this is an older console. However, this year saw the launch of games such as Metroid Dread, Super Mario Wonder, and Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. So, it’s a bit surprising to see that those games didn’t greatly contribute to the console’s sales.

The PlayStation 5 sold 50 million units

This should come as no surprise, as Sony’s consoles typically sell a lot. The PlayStation 4 has sold more than 100 units, as did the PlayStation 2. The PlayStation 3 nearly reached 90 million units. For the PlayStation 5, certain standout hits like Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, God of War: Ragnarok, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, The Last of Us Part I, Returnal, etc. have greatly contributed to the console’s sales. These are some of the best games that you can get for this console, so they’re definitely worth looking at if you have it.

As time goes on, it’s unclear as to how the Playstation will sell in the future. We shouldn’t expect to see the PlayStation 6 until around 2027 or after. So, this console still has a lot of life left in it. It’s going to be in competition with whatever new console Nintendo has coming out and whatever happens with the Microsoft Activision Blizzard buyout. However, the important thing is that the 50 million people who bought the Playstation 5 enjoy what amazing games and experiences they have with the console.
