OnePlus debuted its first foldable this year and immediately took the competition by storm
OnePlus was a little late to the foldable game, but it was worth the wait. In October 2023, OnePlus announced the Open. The company’s first foldable phone improved a lot of complaints that customers had about other foldable on the market.
One of the main things that the OnePlus Open improved on that I really appreciate is the crease. Obviously, with a screen folded in half, there will always be some sort of crease on the display. But with the OnePlus Open, the company has done a fantastic job eliminating as much of that crease as possible. I’ve been using the phone for almost three months, and sometimes I forget it’s even there.
The other area that OnePlus improved on, compared to the competition, was software. OnePlus debuted ‘Open Canvas’ with the OnePlus Open, their new multi-window software. To put it in layman’s terms, it lets you run apps off the screen, giving you more screen real estate than you actually have. So you can run three apps side-by-side-by-side without them feeling super cramped or skinny, which is a huge deal. You can also push apps off-screen and bring them back when needed. OnePlus put the best camera ever on a foldable, beating out some regular slab phones
It’s no secret that foldables generally don’t have the best cameras available. Generally, smartphone makers will put a year or two older flagship camera setup in a foldable. Whether this is to save money or because of the thickness needed for the camera, we’re unsure. But OnePlus said forget it; we’re putting in the best camera available. And that includes a pretty huge, and comical camera bump on the back.
The OnePlus Open and its camera bump look like a mirrorless camera, and it actually rivals my Sony ZV-E10 in terms of photo quality. OnePlus has included a 6x telephoto here by punching into the 3x telephoto lens. These lenses are also huge, making them great for night use. This is because they can bring in more light.
