The Galaxy Z Flip 5 got announced by Samsung on July 26. It got announced alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 5, the Galaxy Tab S9 series, and the Galaxy Watch 6 series. The company had plenty to say during its second Unpacked event of 2023, that’s for sure. The Flip 5 easily stands out compared to its predecessor, due to the fact Samsung enlarged its cover display by quite a bit. The device also folds flat unlike its predecessor.

What colors does the Galaxy Z Flip 5 come in?

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is coming in eight color options. Now, it’s worth noting that half of those colors will be exclusive to Samsung.com. The ones that you’ll be able to get over at your carrier, or a retail store are: Cream, Graphite, Lavender, and Mint. Their availability may vary, though, of course.

If you plan on getting the Galaxy Z Flip 5 from Samsung.com directly, you’ll also be able to choose from the following colors: Blue, Gray, Green, and Yellow. There are plenty of choices here, actually.

What new upgrades does the Galaxy Z Flip 5 have over the Galaxy Z Flip 4?

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 does bring a number of upgrades over its predecessor. We’ll highlight the most notable ones below.

It folds fully flat

Unlike the Galaxy Z Flip 4, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 folds flat. Clamshell foldables from competing OEMs have been folding flat for years, but Samsung opted to leave a gap on its phones. Well, that gap is now closed, as both the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Fold 5 finally fold flat. That was, the inner display is actually well-protected when the phone is folded.

Much larger cover screen

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 included a 1.9-inch cover display. The Galaxy Z Flip 5, on the other hand, has a 3.4-inch cover display. Needless to say, it’s a lot larger, thus able to show you more information. Samsung now refers to it as ‘Flex Window’, by the way. It also has an interesting, and recognizable folder shape.

Even more cover screen widgets

Samsung still doesn’t allow you to use any app on the cover screen, as Motorola does, but the cover screen on the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is still considerably more useful than ever before It now offers a ton of widgets, and more are on the way. You can also enable app widgets in labs for Google Maps, WhatsApp, and more.

Improved cameras

The rear-facing camera setup on the phone has been improved. Samsung claims that the Galaxy Z Flip 5 can capture 3x more light, presumably in comparison with its predecessor. Various software improvements have been issued for other cameras too.

Design refinements

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 simply looks and feels like a more refined product. Not only does it fold fully flat now, and has a more useful cover display which does stand out, but it’s also thinner than its predecessor when folded. It just feels great to use.

Should I buy the Galaxy Z Flip 5?

Based on our initial hands-on time with both the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5, we feel like the Flip 5 delivers more of a change. Not only does it fold flat now, but it has a lot larger cover display, which is more useful than before. Still, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 is still a great device, so if you have that one, upgrading to the Flip 5 may not be the way to go. If not, we do feel like this will be a compelling phone. We’ll have to properly review it to share more info, though, so stay tuned.
