Google‘s long-awaited mid-range smartphone the Pixel 7a is now official. The company unveiled the phone at its I/O conference on Wednesday. Priced at $499 ($549 for the mmWave 5G model), the device is already available to buy in some markets. If you’re looking to switch from an old phone, you can even grab it for free with a trade-in at the Google Store.

Pixel 7a can be free with an eligible trade-in

Most smartphone brands let you trade in your old device when purchasing their latest offerings. It’s no different for the Google Pixel 7a. The company is accepting dozens of models from Apple, Samsung, LG, Motorola, and OnePlus along with its older Pixels. The trade-in value will vary depending on the brand, model, memory and storage configuration, and the condition of your device. But as pointed out by 9to5Google, you can get trade-in discounts of up to $750 when buying the Pixel 7a from the Google Store. Yes, that’s more than the price of the phone itself.

To get the maximum value, you need to trade in an iPhone 14 Pro Max in mint condition. Of course, the Pixel 7a would be a downgrade from the latest iPhone. But if you’re willing to go this route for some reason, the new Pixel won’t cost you a penny as long as you’re giving your iPhone to Google. Trade-in values of other recent iPhones are as follows: $700 for the iPhone 14 Pro, $525 for the iPhone 14 Plus, $500 for the iPhone 14, $428 for the iPhone 13 Pro Max, $375 for the iPhone 13 Pro, $260 for the iPhone 13 mini, and $280 for the iPhone 13.

If you’re trading in a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, you will get a discount of $285 on the Pixel 7a. Likewise, the trade-in value for the Galaxy S22+ is $192, Galaxy S22 is $184, Galaxy S21 Ultra is $191, Galaxy S21+ is $124, and Galaxy S21 is $104. For the Pixel lineup, you get a maximum of $136 when trading in a Pixel 6a. The Pixel 6 Pro would give you $241, while the trade-in value for the Pixel 6 is $155, Pixel 5a is $110, Pixel 5 is $137, and Pixel 4 is $42. Note that these are the maximum values for each model. Google will determine the final value after evaluating the device’s condition.

The latest Pixel is a compelling phone in this price range

At $499/$549, the Pixel 7a is a pretty compelling device. You get the same Tensor G2 processor that powers the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. The package also includes the Titan M2 co-processor, 8GB of RAM, 64MP primary rear camera, 13MP selfie camera, 6.1-inch OLED display, IP67 rating, under-display fingerprint scanner, and a lot more.
