The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024 has witnessed the unveiling of ViXion’s ViXion01. Unlike the AirVision M1 from ASUS, the ViXion01 glasses don’t have a display on the inside. Instead, this smart wearable houses a pair of auto-focus lenses designed to ease your eyes. Developed by Japanese optics specialist Hoya, ViXion aims to provide a practical solution for individuals experiencing difficulties focusing their eyes due to factors such as eye strain, aging, or varying lighting conditions.

The ViXion01 stands out with its futuristic design, crafted by the renowned Japanese design firm Nendo. The core innovation lies in its front-facing Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensor, a technology that measures the distance to the target object and swiftly adjusts the lenses accordingly. This approach mirrors a prototype showcased by the University of Utah in 2017 but has since been miniaturized and brought to the market by ViXion.

During a demonstration, the ViXion01 showcased its effectiveness in enhancing fine details, making it particularly useful for activities like model kit assembly or reading small print. The initial setup is user-friendly, involving manual adjustments for lens alignment and diopter settings. Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity allows users to fine-tune settings through a dedicated app.

Weighing in at 50 grams, the ViXion01 may require minor adjustments for balance, but users reported a generally pleasant visual experience. The auto-focus feature significantly improved eyesight for both near and far distances, reducing eyestrain, making it a good choice for tasks involving close-up work.

However, ViXion emphasizes that the ViXion01 is not a medical device, advising against its use while driving or exercising due to its limited field of view. The smart glasses offer a battery life of 10 hours, with a three-hour USB-C charging time. While not fully waterproof, the ViXion01 boasts an IPX3 water resistance rating, suitable for light rain or sweat.

The ViXion01 is currently available for pre-order in Japan at 99,000 yen (approximately $690), with shipments expected to commence in February. While ViXion is yet to confirm an overseas launch, the potential success of ViXion’s innovative smart glasses could pave the way for a broader international release in the future.
